el santuario de chimayó

the chapel of miracles
most visitors come in search of miraculous cures. the town of chimayó was famous for its healing powers far before this chapel was built.


el pocito is the small room in the back of the chapel. it is known as the "room of miracles." a round hole in the middle of the floor is filled with holy dirt. people scoop out the dirt and take it home. others kneel and kiss the earth, eat the dirt, rub it on their bodies, or onto photographs of family members too ill to travel.
